Day 2: More Berlin

This is just going to be short because I really need to sleep, its been a big day and jetlag has caught up to me. No photos, I promise to share them later.

So today we had a full day in Berlin. Lots of fun. The day is prettty short in winter up north so sunshine is limited. We went on a walking tour which focused on World War 2 and the Cold War. Anja, our guide, was incredibly intelligent and very funny. The tour began at the Reichstag, the seat of German Parliament. It is a beautiful building that opened in 1894 and was burnt down in 1933 before being rebuilt. It is this burning down that lead to so much power being given to Hitler. Also turns out that the famous picture of the Soviets hoisting their flag on the rooftop of the Reichstag was staged and it was actually the Polish that did it, with the Soviets taking a picture of it the next day all set up for propaganda purposes.

Throughout the tour we were introduced to other important members of the Nazi Party including the Minister for Propaganda, the head of the Gastapo and the drug addict who lost the Battle of Britain. We also visited Hitler's Bunker (which is now a car park) and the Holocaust Memorial, which is amazing, really thought provoking and beautiful in the snow and sunlight.

After the tour, we went to lunch and after which I went for a walk back to the hostel because I was so sore and tired. However, along tyhe way, we saw some beautiful churches, fountains and statues. Its the age of the city that lends itself to having such stunning buildings, things we just don't have in Australia.

After two hours sleep we had dinner and I must say, the pork was amazing. The Germans do love their meat and they know how to cook it. It is a shame that tomorrow we are leaving. But at the same time I am excited for Prague.

Must go to bed now, my back is killing me
